Vets Blog
Veterans Day came and went this year with a lot of accolades for my fellow Veterans. For the first time I actually took the day off and played golf with a friend of mine. I played my normal game; you know the one that I get my butt kicked. But it was still nice to be out on the course. That night I was watching TV and the military kept being brought up in one way or the other. I heard Army, Navy Airforce, Marines mentioned, but not the Coast Guard.
I thought about it for a while and realized that very rarely did I ever see the Coast Guard represented in TV commercials or even on sports broadcasts. Until last night, I was watching the Lions football game and the coach was wearing a pin on his shirt with a picture of a fallen Coast Guardsman. I thought to myself, good somebody recognizes the sacrifices that those people make.
I don’t think that a lot of people understand that they are the old branch of the military in the United States. They have served in every major war that this country has been involved in. Because they are the smallest branch of the military (35,000 when I was in) they are overlooked and underestimated. They are the ones that will go into the storm when everyone else is running away. They are the ones who get calls for help when a ship is in trouble.
So, if you do not really know who they are or what they do, you should look them up. I think that you would be very surprised. To all the veterans out there, I hope that you had a great veteran’s day. To my brothers and sister in or out of the Coast Guard Semper Paratus!!!!
