How does that song go? “Beat the drum and hold the phone, the sun came out today”. The great lyrics from John Foggerty. The song is totally about baseball and how it is synonymous with Summer. There is a league on Cape Cod called the Cape Cod Senior Softball League. Its been around for a long time. The guys that play in it are serious about the sport. You can tell by the way they play the game that there is a passion and a burning desire to have at least one more good game.
I tell you this because I tried out to play in the league and by some stroke of luck got drafted onto a team. I had not touched a ball since I was in my 20s. I love playing in this league because it is a constant challenge. Also, the enthusiasm and the competitiveness of my team mates just flows right through me. I get out there and feel like a kid again. (Except an hour after the game when I can hardly move) Right now our team is tied for first with six games to go in the season. We even have small crowds show up for the games. The whole thing is pretty cool. So that is what I have been up to. I hope your summers were as fun.
But now summer is almost over. Most of you know that I have a sailboat. (SABINE) She was a good boat for me, and I had a lot of good memories aboard her sailing around Buzzards Bay. But between my illness in 2019 and my lack of use this year, I decided to donate her to the Mass Maritime Academy. There she will find a good home and hopefully be sailed more than I was able to. For me, making that choice was difficult, but in the end, I believe it was the right one.
The market has been pretty volatile, but it has almost come back from the free fall earlier in the year. With the election coming up in just a few months and it being so keenly contested. I am not sure what is going to happen. If you remember, earlier this year I predicted that the DOW would break 30,000. I still think there is a possibility if a vaccine is found in the next couple of months. Four years ago, I said that if the Democrats won the market would fall. I do not think that will be the case on this go around. I think this year’s end will be determined by a vaccine and how small businesses finish the year. No matter what happens I do not think the election will have the same affect as it did four years ago. So I am going to stay optimistic.
Now some disappointing news: Because of the virus and “Safe distancing rules”, we are going to have to cancel the annual wine tasting event this year. Hopefully, next year we will be able to restart the event again…
On a more positive note, to my knowledge, none of my clients have contracted the virus to date. So, stay safe and remember, it really is important to keep your annual review appointments.
